Episode Guide

1.01: The Dragon's Call

Merlin, a young man with the gift of magic, arrives in Camelot in search of a new beginning only to find himself in a place where magic is punishable by death. Here he meets Gaius, his mentor; the ruthless king of Camelot, Uther Pendragon; his ward, the beautiful Lady Morgana; Gwen, her friendly maidservant; and the arrogant but handsome prince Arthur, upon whom the future of Camelot depends. Desperate to find a purpose for his magic, Merlin is stunned to discover that his destiny is to protect the future king, with whom he does not get along particularly well.

1.02: Valiant

A knight named Valiant arrives in court to compete in a sword-fighting tournament. Valiant holds in his power an enchanted shield which causes great harm to his opponents. Merlin's attempts to warn everyone fall on deaf ears- and Arthur is next to face Valiant.

1.03: The Mark of Nimueh

Camelot faces a double danger when a lethal plague starts spreading through the castle and Gwen is arrested for witchcraft. Merlin must team up with Arthur and Morgana to find the culprit behind the evil deeds.

1.04: The Poisoned Chalice

As Bayard and the Knights of the Western Isles are welcomed to Camelot for a feast, Nimueh infiltrates Bayard's entourage and begins a plot to get revenge on Merlin. Posing as a servant girl, she tricks Merlin into drinking from a poisoned chalice. Falling gravely ill, the only chance Merlin has is for an antidote to be prepared. Arthur takes it upon himself to retrieve the needed ingredients but, with Nimueh doing everything she can to thwart Arthur's quest, will they be able to save Merlin in time?

1.05: Lancelot

Merlin is saved from a terrifying winged beast by a heroic stranger- a young man named Lancelot, who dreams of becoming a Knight of Camelot. In order to thank him, Merlin provides falsified records of Lancelot's noble birth and Lancelot is accepted. However, with the winged beast- discovered to be a Griffin- still on the loose, Merlin's decision could have far-reaching consequences not just for Lancelot but for Camelot...

1.06: A Remedy To Cure All Ills

When Morgana falls ill, Gaius is unable to cure her. However, a mysterious physician named Edwin Muirden is able to make her well again. As Edwin charms his way into the court, Gaius becomes suspicious. But is there a darker motive at work?

1.07: The Gates Of Avalon

Arthur and Merlin save a young woman and her father from a band of brigands. Arthur becomes quite besotted with the young girl, Sophia, and offers them refuge in Camelot. However, it's not just Merlin who is suspicious of the new arrivals- Morgana awakes from a nightmare about Arthur's death at the hands of a beautiful young woman to find Sophia is the girl in the nightmare...

1.08: The Beginning Of The End

When a druid and his boy apprentice are caught in Camelot, Morgana and Merlin hide the boy from Uther's guards- but the druid is executed. Uther declares that anyone harbouring the boy will be dealt with severely. They must try and smuggle the boy from Camelot without being caught. But why does the Great Dragon insist that Merlin should not help?

1.09: Excalibur

Uther's past comes back to haunt him as a mysterious black knight interrupts Arthur's coming-of-age celebrations, throwing down his gauntlet and challenging the Knights of Camelot to combat. The Black Knight, seemingly unstoppable, makes easy work of his combatants. But who is the Black Knight, and why is Uther so uneasy?

1.10: The Moment Of Truth

Merlin's home village of Ealdor is attacked by raiders led by the fearsome Kanen, but Uther will not do anything to help- to cross into Ealdor, which is outside of Camelot's boundaries, would constitute an act of war. Merlin leaves Camelot to help to defend his home- and is surprised to find help from Morgana, Gwen and Arthur. However, an old friend of Merlin forces the young sorcerer into making a difficult choice: will he use magic to save the village and thus reveal his secret to Arthur?

1.11: The Labyrinth of Gedref

When Arthur kills a unicorn, he brings a curse upon Camelot. With the mythic city plagued by both famine and drought, time is short for the curse to be lifted. The mysterious Anhora, keeper of the unicorns, tells Arthur he is responsible for bringing the famine to Camelot- and to lift the curse, Arthur will be tested... but unless he makes amends for the killing of the unicorn, Camelot will be doomed.

1.12: To Kill The King

When Gwen's father Tom unwittingly helps a renegade sorcerer turn lead into gold, he is arrested and faces trial for treason. Despite pleas from both Arthur and Morgana, Uther is adamant- Tom will be tried and, if found guilty, will be executed. Morgana tries to help Tom escape but tragedy ensues... and Morgana becomes hellbent on revenge. Merlin uncovers a plot to kill Uther, but will he try and stop it- or sit by and let it happen?

1.13: Le Morte d'Arthur

When out on a hunt, Arthur encounters a huge monstrous creature never before seen. Gaius realises it is a Questing Beast, a creature conjured from the nightmares of a long-dead king, whose bite is always fatal. When Arthur faces the creature again, it is vanquished... but Arthur is bitten and his life hangs in the balance. Merlin is told by the Great Dragon to seek the Isle of the Blessed, where members of the old religion have the power to save the future king. However, there is a price to pay. In order for a life to be saved, a life must be taken...


2.01: The Curse of Cornelius Sigan

In the dark tunnels beneath Camelot an ancient tomb is discovered, filled with treasure. Gaius begs the King to seal it shut again, fearing the tomb belongs to Cornelius Sigan, an evil sorcerer who cursed Camelot and swore to one day return and destroy the city. But Uther is too taken with the treasure to listen, insisting Sigan is just a fairytale.
Meanwhile, new servant Cedric muscles in on Merlin's position as Arthur's right-hand man and turns the prince against his loyal friend. Merlin is convinced the slippery newcomer is up to something and he's right: Cedric is a conman and a thief who's after the magnificent jewel found at the heart of the tomb. Little does Cedric know, his precious prize is more dangerous than he could possibly imagine.
Camelot has never been more vulnerable but how can Merlin make things right when, thanks to Cedric, he might have lost Arthur's friendship for good? Merlin faces the prospect of turning to the creature he swore he'd never trust again: The Great Dragon.

2.02: The Once and Future Queen

2.04: Lancelot and Guinevere

Fearsome and cruel outcast Hengist, mistakes Gwen for Morgana and kidnaps her. Arthur and Morgana turn to Uther for help, who refuses to pay the ransom. Defying his father's authority, Arthur goes to Gwen's rescue ready to face all the dangers of an enemy territory and fight for the girl's freedom.
Merlin suspects that Arthur's concern comes from something deeper than a prince's devotion to one of his people and that he cares about Gwen in a personal way. To make matters worse, when Arthur reaches Hengist's castle he finds out that he is not alone in the quest: Lancelot has arrived earlier with the same purpose and powerful feelings between Gwen and Lancelot have been rekindled.

2.05: Beauty and the Beast - Part One

Lady Catrina and her strange servant Jonas arrive in Camelot, where they are welcome to stay by a most delighted king Uther, who becomes captivated by his latest guest. Arthur, on the contrary, far from sharing his father's enthusiasm and in the sight of the flirting going on, is pretty appalled with the situation.
Merlin and Gaius have the feeling that she is not what she seems and their suspicions are proven true when Merlin discovers that Lady Catrina is a troll and that unfortunately, her intentions are far beyond the prize of a king's heart. Horrified, he reveals the truth to Arthur, who doesn't believe him.

2.06: Beauty and the Beast - Part Two

Newly crowned Queen Catrina settles into her new role as Camelot's first lady. But as her troll nature is revealed, her power over Uther increases affecting the entire kingdom. When Catrina accuses Merlin of stealing, he is forced to sneak around the castle trying to find a way of revealing Catrina for who she really is without getting caught.

2.07: The Witchfinder

In his determination to rule magic out of Camelot forever, Uther hires the services of Aredian, a terrifying witch hunter who is most feared due to the fact that he stops at nothing in the quest to uncover all and every kind of sorcery. Even though no one is under direct suspicion, several people in Camelot are afraid that the witch hunter could see straight through them: Morgana is worried that Uther might have her executed and Gaius is concerned for the fate of Merlin and his own, since caring for the young warlock is considered crime and treason.

2.08: The Sins of the Father

After a mysterious warrior challenges Arthur to a duel, an unpredictable and devastating chain of events is set in motion as both the young prince and Merlin find themselves on a strange quest at the behest of Morgause. Through the beautiful lady, Arthur will find out a dark secret that could bring about the most terrible and unexpected consequences, the downfall of Camelot being among them.

2.09: The Lady of the Lake

When Merlin discovers by chance a beautiful Druid girl called Freya trapped in a bounty hunter's cage, he feels like he has to do something about it and despite Gaius' advice not to get involved, he goes with his instincts and helps the girl escape. The young warlock can't think of a better place to harbour the girl than the tunnels beneath Camelot, but it would be a short remedy since the bounty hunter won't resign to lose his prize and will conduct a frantic search for her and a fierce magical beast has been reported to be on the loose. As Merlin's friendship with the Druid girl grows in intensity, it is tested to the limit by the adverse circumstances and the boy is forced to make a heartbreaking decision in his struggle to keep Freya safe.

2.10: Sweet Dreams

The visit of some Camelot rival kingdoms' dignitaries comes disguised as a tricky peace talk, while King Alined really means war. In that light, he'll do his best to stir the waters and make hostilities arise, no matter if it involves the use of magic. Trickler, Alined's jester, casts a spell on Arthur making him fall madly in love with Vivian, King Olaf's beloved daughter. This outcome, considered a belligerent act, triggers the odds between both rival kings. The havoc caused by the incident starts up quarrels between the royal committee and chaos is ensured in the palace, putting Camelot once more on the brink of war.

2.11: The Witch's Quickening

In his determination to return magic to the kingdom and destroy Camelot, the ruthless warlock Alvarr doesn't fear fighting Uther. However, he must first reclaim the Crystal of Neahtid, a precious magical relic of the Old Religion. Even though few can control its power, Alvarr believes that the young Druid Mordred can be an ally to use it in the benefit of their cause. Many have lost their lives trying to reclaim the crystal, safely locked up in Uther's vaults. But Alvarr counts on Morgana's powerful bond with the Druid boy as a secret weapon to undermine the king's precautions. Despite Morgana's fondness of Mordred, will she go as far as to turn into a thief and a traitor to help him and Alvarr? Merlin will be once more surprised by Morgana's choices and the true power of the mysterious crystal.

2.12: The Fires of Idirsholas

When the Fires of Idirsholas burn for the first time in 300 years, Gaius fears it heralds the return of the Knights of Medhir. Morgause has returned, hell-bent on ending Uthur's reign. Arthur and Merlin ride out to confront the Knights but barely escape with their lives. But when they return to Camelot, they find out that eveyone except for Morgana is under a strange enchanment. Is she behind this new magical threat? As Morgause and the Knights attack a helpless kingdom, Merlin finds his loyalties stretched to the limit.

2.13: The Last Dragonlord

The Great Dragon has been set free and fully enraged turns his violent hatred towards Camelot without pity. The castle is crumbling down and Arthur and his men realize they won't be able to hold out for much longer. The only way to defeat the Dragon appears to be a Dragonlord, but Uther wiped them all out of the kingdom years ago. However, Gaius admits that there might be one of them alive and hiding. The last Dragonlord becomes not only the only hope of future for Camelot but also a key to Merlin's own past.


3.01: The Tears of Uther Pendragon, Part 1

A year after her disappearance and when almost all hope is lost, Morgana returns to Camelot. While Merlin is afraid she might remember the circumstances of her disappearance and give him away in front of the king, a delighted Uther announces a banquet to celebrate. However, soon afterwards evil magic starts to take hold of the king's mind, putting the safety of Camelot at risk as he is consumed with hallucinations and enemies reach his door. Merlin suspects Morgana is behind the enchantment but his search for the truth puts his life in peril while Arthur is forced to take control and face new foes on his own. Will they succeed to rescue the king and Camelot from destruction?

3.02: The Tears of Uther Pendragon, Part 2

With the help of the Great Dragon, Merlin manages to return to Camelot only to find out that is it on the verge of invasion: Morgause and Cenred have teamed up and plot against a weakened Uther. Cenred's initial reluctance is won over by the fact that they count on an ally within Camelot walls who will ensure the castle is taken. Uther is unable to rule which forces Arthur to step up front and defend the citadel agains Cenred's powerful army. With the help of Morgause and to make things worse, Morgana plays a deadly card and summons a skeleton army to wreak havoc within the castle walls. Camelot's fate rests once again on Arthur's shoulders and Merlin's magic as they fight in their own way to hold off both an army of the living and an army of the dead. Will they manage to succeed?

3.03: Goblin's Gold

When Merlin comes across a secret chamber, he accidentally releases a goblin. The mischievous little creature possesses Gaius, making the wise and renowned court physician turn into a shadow of his former self, quickly developing a taste for gold, ale and magical jokes. To make things worse, the king suddenly becomes bald and a nasty scourge of flatulence hits the royal household. Will Merlin be able to figure out the source of all troubles, return the gobblin back to where he came from and put an end to the havoc before any real damage is done?

3.04: Gwaine

Merlin and Arthur find themselves outnumbered in a bar fight but an enigmatic young man helps them win. The man’s name is Gwaine and he risks his own life to protect Arthur but during his act of bravery he is seriously wounded. The Prince decides to take him back to Camelot where he could make a recovery with Gaius' help. Gwaine immediately gets to work: drinking, flirting with the ladies and causing lots of trouble for Merlin who has been instructed to look after him. However, when two unscrupulous knights seem to plot to murder the Prince, will Merlin and Gwaine be able to stop them and save Arthur?

3.05: The Crystal Cave

After an unexpected meeting with the enigmatic old sorcerer Taliesin, the wizard takes Merlin to the crystal cave allowing him to witness a glimpse of the future. However, this gesture turns out to be more of a curse than a gift when, much to his horror, Merlin sees Morgana set to kill Uther. The young warlock knows he must do his best to try and stop the future from playing out. But changing the pages of destiny is a very dangerous game and his actions end up having fatal consequences. With the whole of Camelot in a state of grief, will Merlin be able to change the course of destiny and undo the damage he has caused, or will it be too late?

3.06: The Changeling

Uther pressures Arthur into an arranged marriage with a visiting princess, Elena, though Merlin soon has reservations after discovering that Elena may not exactly be who she claims to be. As he tries to uncover the princess' dark secret, he learns that Elena's nanny is a Pixie. But what are their motivations? Who do they work for? And most important of all, what benefit do they get from her marriage to Arthur, the heir to the throne of Camelot? Will Merlin be able to get to the bottom of it all and prevent Arthur from making the biggest mistake of his life?

3.07: The Castle of Fyrien

Gwen faces an impossible dilemma when she is forced to choose between saving the life of Elyan, her estranged brother and only sibling or Arthur's, Camelot's prince and the love of her life. When one of them is certain to find death at the hands of Cenred, who will Gwen choose? Once again, loyalty, love and friendships are tested to the limit as Arthur, Merlin and Gwen are forced to put their minds together to try and find a way out of the cruel quandary. Morgana and Morgause, in turn, will do their best ruin their plans. Will good conquer evil or will Gwen end up losing someone she loves again?

3.08: The Eye Of The Phoenix

Arthur embarks alone on a quest to prove himself worthy of the Camelot throne by retrieving the Golden Trident from the Fisher King. With the Prince beyond the protection of the citadel, Morgana takes the opportunity to use her dark magic. She gives him a precious bracelet that contains a Phoenix Eye, insisting that he wears it at all times for protection. However, the magical jewel takes away Arthur's life force and he is left defenceless in the Fisher King's perilous realm. With the help of Gwaine, will Merlin be able to reach Arthur in time and fulfil his own quest to protect the future king of Camelot?

3.09: Love In The Time Of Dragons

Merlin is pleased to get acquainted with a different side of his mentor when Alice, an old flame of Gaius's, arrives in Camelot. However, when the warlock discovers that she is under the influence of a Manticore, a creature from the Old Religion, Merlin has no other choice but to tell the physician about Alice's evil scheme. Blinded by love, Gaius refuses to believe Merlin's reveal and their close bond suffers the consequence as both friends fall out. With the King in danger and all evidence of the wicked plot pointing to Alice and the mean magical creature that has possessed her, will Merlin be able to make Gaius see sense before it is too late?

3.10: Queen Of Hearts

When Morgana is tormented by dreams in which Guinevere becomes Queen of Camelot, Morgause encourages her to reveal Arthur and Gwen's courtship to Uther in the knowledge that he will do whatever it takes to stop his son from marrying a serving girl. As a result, Uther banishes Gwen from the kingdom forcing Arthur to make the ultimate sacrifice of leaving Camelot with her. Determined to stop the loving couple, Morgana frames Gwen for the scandalous crime of enchanting the Prince. With destiny once again at stake, Merlin will be compelled to risk everything to save Gwen from a gruesome death.

3.11: The Sorcerer's Shadow

Camelot's legendary tournament only has one rule: there are no rules whatsoever. Terrifying warriors start to fill the mythical city, Gilli between them. Despite his small stature, Gilli is ready to join the action and committed to achieve victory with a secret weapon to help him: magic. When Gilli begins to realise the full extent of his powers, Merlin becomes torn since his new friend is putting his own life in danger as well as threatening the very heart of Camelot with his actions. Will Merlin be able to make Gilli see sense before it's too late?

3.12: The Coming Of Arthur, Part 1

Arthur and Merlin embark on a dangerous mission to capture the Cup of Life, a powerful magical artifact that carries the gift of immortality. However, before they are able to retrieve the Cup they fall prey to Jarl, an unscrupulous slave trader. They manage to escape when a trusted friend comes to their rescue but with Jarl's help, the Cup of Life ends up in Morgause's hands. Now that the dreadful sisters count on an immortal army at their disposal, will Morgause and Morgana overthrow Uther once and for all?

3.13: The Coming Of Arthur, Part 2

Will Arthur be able to save Camelot from the evil Morgana? Morgana, newly crowned as Queen of Camelot, begins a reign of terrible evil over the innocent citizens of the kingdom. Counting on Morgause and her immortal army at her command all hope seems lost for Uther, who is forced to witness how his kingdom crumble under the unimaginable cruelty of his own daughter. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of Camelot, Arthur recovers his strength and plans a counter attack with the help of a few loyals at his side: Gwaine, Lancelot, Elyan and Percival. However, Merlin is aware that not even a skilful warrior like Arthur can defeat an immortal foe without magic. Will he be able to reclaim the great sword Excalibur from the Lake of Avalon in time to save the lives of those he cares the most about?


4.01: The Darkest Hour, Part 1

Merlin is to face his toughest challenge yet when Morgana's blind determination puts at risk Arthur's future as well as the very balance of the world. With her unbounded powers at their highest, the sorceress uses powerful magic to tear the mystical veil between worlds making the mighty Cailleach to come forth. Hellish creatures are released and wander around, killing everyone who succumbs to their touch. With Uther but a mere shadow of his former self, it comes down to Arthur and his loyal knights to safeguard the kingdom. However, swords won't be enough to vanquish the newest threat and Merlin is utterly shocked to find out what it'll take to restore the equilibrium of the world: a sacrifice of unimaginable proportions is required.

4.02: The Darkest Hour, Part 2

With the kingdom on the verge of collapse and Morgana ready to attack, Arthur must carry on his mission to vanquish the Dorocha short-handed as Lancelot is racing back to Camelot taking a dying Merlin with him. Despite their journey to the Isle of the Blessed is filled with danger, the knights can't anticipate the sacrifice that Arthur has set his mind to make there. Friendship and loyalty are tested to the limit, but ultimately, it's the power of love which changes everyone's life forever.

4.03: The Wicked Day

While Camelot's citadel is frantic in preparation of Prince Arthur's birthday party, King Odin plots to ensure this is one celebration Camelot will never forget. The prince's old adversary has arranged for a deadly assassin to lurk among the assembling guests with intent to strike. As a result, the kingdom is left devastated and it comes down to Merlin to set things right again. How far will he be prepared for order to be restored to Camelot? Will he really risk everything and reveal his secret?

4.04: Aithusa

A mysterious man by the name Julius Borden arrives in Camelot with news about a secret of magical nature which threatens to change the kingdom for ever: he knows the location of the last part of the key to the tomb of Ashkanar. The ancient mausoleum holds a very special treasure: the last remaining dragon's egg. Merlin is immediately drawn in by Borden's words and promises to help in the quest. But who is this enigmatic stranger and, more importantly, why does he really want the egg?

4.05: His Father's Son

Not long after his coronation Arthur finds out for the first time what it's really like to be King. After incurring the wrath of the formidable Queen Annis, Arthur's skills as a ruler are put into test. Camelot's new king is forced to find the strength to become the leader his people desperately need as the lives of thousands hang in the balance and depend only on his courage and judgement.

4.06: A Servant Of Two Masters

Merlin becomes a deadly weapon in Morgana's fight for supremacy when he falls into her hands. By recurring to ancient magic, she manages to turn friend against friend and creates the perfect assassin out of the young sorcerer which puts an oblivious King Arthur in great danger. Will anyone notice Merlin's unusual behaviour before he is able to do any serious harm to the King?

4.07: The Secret Sharer

Morgana forms an alliance with the enigmatic wizard Alator to try and uncover a secret that could change the course of destiny. Now that she counts on allies on both sides of the castle walls, would anyone be able to stop Morgana before Merlin's greatest secret is revealed?

4.08: Lamia

Merlin is drawn to a distant village when a mysterious illness strikes. However, it soon becomes clear that something sinister turns the air sour and that there is much more at stake than just his own well-being. Far from home and having to fare by himself, Merlin becomes entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse where he can trust no one. Confused about who is the hunter and who is the hunted, will the young warlock be able to survive long enough to find out the truth?

4.09: Lancelot Du Lac

Sir Lancelot makes a shocking return from the dead and old feelings reignite, making Gwen fight temptation to avoid committing an unspeakable act of betrayal that would destroy the legacy of Camelot forever. With heads and hearts at stake Merlin soon becomes suspicious. Can a man of honour break oaths and defy death or is there something darker at play?

4.10: A Herald Of The New Age

The Camelot Knights stumble across a ghostly shrine deep in the forest, its eerie atmosphere betraying a dark history better left undisturbed. By ignoring Merlin's warning, Elyan's actions spark a chain of events more frightening than anyone could possibly have imagined. Can a grievous wrong be put right before past demons change the future forever?

4.11: The Hunter's Heart

Morgana forms a new alliance, this time with the powerful Southron warlord Helios, and together they come up with the perfect plan to bring about Camelot's downfall. With the King and the kingdom distracted with the arrival of the beautiful Princess Mithian it comes down to an absent friend to raise the alarm. But with past wounds still raw, can love really conquer all when Guinevere returns? Or is a deadly arrow destined to fly straight into the heart of Camelot?

4.12: The Sword In The Stone, Part 1

Morgana manages to close in around Camelot by leading the vast and powerful Southron army. Her strike proves to be a successful one that forces Arthur and his close loyals run for their lives. However, Morgana won't be satisfied with letting him escape that easily and a chilling hunt will follow. Will Merlin be able to save the King from Morgana's clutches or will Arthur's luck have finally run out?

4.13: The Sword In The Stone, Part 2

After Morgana and Helios' successful alliance, Camelot is once again in the sorceress' hands while Arthur and Merlin become outlaws on the run. They find themselves in a desperate situation, trapped in Ealdor and with a ruthless army closing in. Arthur must assume control before Camelot is lost forever but his conviction is lost in the face of Agravaine's betrayal and the strength of Morgana's force. Once again, it comes down to Merlin to restore Arthur's faith with an extraordinary act that will prove to the King that he was born to rule.
